Who's pushing your buttons?

NLP Mind coaching is very helpful in teaching people how to deal with the stress and anxiety which is sometimes caused by personal interactions, whether at work, within a relationship or indeed anywhere. Is there someone in your life who has that knack of winding you up, or making you feel guilty, stupid or ignorant? How would you like to feel differently when interacting with them?

A better understanding of the art and science of communication, both verbal and non-verbal (e.g. body language) can rapidly lead to a better sense of control of one's own responses, rather than the all-too-common feeling of having one's personal buttons pressed and then responding accordingly!

In an NLP coaching session, you can learn....

  • How to recognise the subtleties of language that can motivate, or de-motivate you, and others.
  • How to read, and "speak" body language.
  • How to recognise the different preferences individuals have for the the ways in which they process information mentally.
  • How to take control of your internal state at any given moment, enabling you to feel calm, confident, focussed, or however you need to feel in any given situation.
  • How to stop worrying about what others think.

Slimming for summer

Once the triple whammy of over indulgence that is St Patrick's Day, Mother's Day and Easter is safely behind us, thoughts may be turning towards the summer holidays and the annual weight loss season!

Work this out before you work out

  • One portion of Tesco lasagne (560 cal): 45 minutes of spinning
  • One slice of Domino's pepperoni pizza (198 cal): 45 minutes of swimming
  • Chocolate-chip muffin (476 cal): 58 minutes of climbing
  • Packet of cheese and onion crisps (184 cal): 35 minutes of frisbee
  • Subway tuna wrap (310 cal): 1 hour and 10 minutes of body pump
  • Bacon sandwich on white bread (430 cal): 58 minutes of football
  • Ham and cheese toastie (436 cal): 1 hour and 30 minutes of netball
  • Granny Smith apple (62 cal): 15 minutes of weightlifting
  • M&S hot cross bun (159 cal): 20 minutes of skipping
  • Mars bar (280 cal): 50 minutes of aqua aerobics

It's easier to get slimmer and stay slimmer by controlling your eating than it is by working it off. By using hypnosis and NLP it is possible to re-educate the mind to be happier with smaller portions of food, so that you take on board only the food you need to fuel your body.

Treating Depression

Everyone feels a bit "down" from time to time. It's part of life. Clinical depression, however, is a lot different to having the occasional "blue" day. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness become dominant, and physical symptoms can occur in addition to emotional or psychological ones. The standard medical treatment is usually anti-depressant medication, typically selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI's) such as Prozac and Seroxat and Lexapro. These act by "rebalancing" the brain chemistry to become more like that of a non-depressed person.

Of course this is a good thing, but it does nothing to address the reasons for that chemistry being out of balance in the first place. This means the depression is being managed rather than treated. If the medication is taken away, then symptoms tend to return. Depression is only defeated by dealing with the cause, which is the thought pattern of depression itself. This is most easily done using hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a really potent tool in the treatment of depression. It is inherently relaxing, which is a good start. It also separates conscious, logical, interference from the therapeutic process and allows the therapist to address the illogical, subconscious part of the mind. This is where thought patterns change, behaviours are altered and symptoms begin to lift. The process is relatively brief - usually 8-10 sessions, which compares favourably with CBT and conventional drug therapy. A lot of suggestion work is recorded onto CD for the client to use at home, which speeds up things quite a lot.

The process aims to do the following:

  • Silence the "rumination" process and allowing sleep to happen naturally
  • Break the pattern of hopelessness and negative expectation
  • Break the pattern of feeling stuck, helpless, and hopeless
  • Teach a clear sense of personal boundaries and how to maintain them
  • Transform guilt into liberation
  • Prevent life's stressors from controlling the ability to cope
  • Enable empowerment and foresight
There is more information on my website; but to get the full picture, please feel free to avail of an introductory consultation (free of charge and of obligation) to find out how this could benefit you, or someone you care about. It's much easier when you talk about it.......

Quitting smoking

Giving up smoking is a lot easier for most people than the drug companies behind nicotine replacement patches and chewing gum, and the manufacturers of "e-cigarettes" would like you to think. Please check out this article on my web site to find out how hypnotherapy could make you a non-smoker in 90 minutes. It's quicker, more effective and cheaper than the alternatives, and is tailored to your individual smoking pattern to help you quickly eradicate the dreaded "cravings".

Wedding nerves

When you’re planning the biggest day of your life there is plenty of advice about looking absolutely fabulous on the day. However, it’s just as important that you feel wonderful too. This should be a day to remember – for all the right reasons!

Wedding nerves take two forms. There is the anxiety of the actual day itself when it arrives, but also the constant worrying in the time leading up to it.  Of course, you could change your mind! No, I don’t mean by cancelling the wedding, but by changing the thought processes that cause many people to dread the very thing they should look forward to!

You can learn how to deal with both forms of anxiety, so that not only will you be relaxed and radiant on the day itself, you will actually look forward to it in a positive way too. It’s surprisingly simple, and only takes a couple of sessions.

So whether it’s fear of blushing, being centre of attention or maybe the best man is terrified of making his speech; let’s start planning now to make some perfect memories to look back on this time next year!

Wedding Nerves Q&A

Why do people suffer with wedding nerves and anxiety?

The problem starts in the imagination. As the word suggests, the mind forms images – typically of things which may go wrong – and if these images are vivid enough and repetitive, the subconscious mind begins to react to them as if they were real, producing adrenaline and the familiar anxiety symptoms of the “fight or flight” hormone, adrenaline.

What is the best thing to do about it?

Talk to an NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) mind coach. They are trained to help you reprogram your mind to a more positive way of thinking. With a little guidance and practice you can use that imagination to begin to look forward to the big day in a positive way.

Is there a "quick fix"?

For once, there actually is. Assuming the client doesn’t have a more serious underlying problem, such as depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder, the thought processes can be turned around in one or two sessions of NLP.

Are wedding nerves or anxiety unusual for Bride/Groom?

It is very common. The majority of people are apprehensive about the “public speaking” part of the day, in particular. An NLP mind coach can teach you how to feel naturally confident and calm on the day – even at the moments most people look forward to the least!

How long will it take for nerves/anxiety to go away?

The process starts almost straight away. As you practice the simple techniques you are taught, it rapidly becomes second nature. Of course, just because it works quickly doesn’t mean you should leave it until the last minute. The sooner you start, the sooner you can begin to enjoy looking forward to the biggest day in your life.

If I only had time......

Time is the ultimate finite resource. You are given only a certain amount of it to spend in your life, and you never know how much you have been given. The only certainty is that you can only spend that time once. There are no refunds. Perhaps now is the time to consider a budget for your time, so that you get the best value for your investment.

We are living in an age of time poverty. Despite the technological advances of recent decades, people find that the amount of discretionary time available to them seems to be under ever increasing pressure. This is without doubt one of the commonest causes of stress that I deal with every day as a therapist and coach. It seems everyone is making demands on our time – the boss, the kids, the parents, friends, e-mail, and even Facebook. Finding the way to balance these demands is vital to reducing stress, getting things done, achieving goals, and finding that precious quality time to recharge the batteries!

Time management coaching gives you back the power to control your own life; your own time. You will learn simple techniques to manage the demands placed on you, so that you always feel in control. You will find yourself doing the things that are important – doing them in a planned way. This leaves plenty of flexibility to handle a crisis if it occurs – without ever feeling overwhelmed. It also makes time for the good stuff in life, enabling you to enjoy yourself without feeling guilty about what you think you “should” be doing.

You will also learn how to identify what is really important to you – your values in life. When you really understand your values and start living your life and managing your time around them you are on the fast track to happiness and fulfillment. If this idea appeals to you (and why wouldn't it?), call me on 021 487 6072 or visit to find out more.

Weight loss

If you're considering shedding a few pounds for a special event, or maybe just thinking about how you'll look in those slightly less forgiving summer clothes, don't waste your time, energy and money on any of the diet programmes being touted in the popular press at this time of year. In any case, what is the point of losing weight just to gain it again later in the year?

Rather than repeatedly dieting, why not change your relationship with food forever? If you are prepared to do that, to accept that you can survive and be happy on smaller portions and with taking more exercise then please look at my web site and find out how hypnotherapy and NLP can help you achieve that goal. If you just want a magic wand or a quick fix, move on!

Stopping smoking

Thinking of giving up the cigarettes? It's easier than you think.

When you smoke, it's not usually for a love of the taste or the smell of the cigarette. It's not even for the nicotine. You do it because it has become associated with a nice feeling of some sort, and that is what your “cravings” are actually for. Perhaps it’s relaxation, or just that self-indulgent "me" moment we all need from time to time, or maybe an excuse to escape work for a few minutes - but whatever it is, it feels good. Nicotine gum and patches don't let you keep that good feeling - hypnosis and NLP do. Imagine being able to feel that feeling just because you can, and then being able to access that good feeling instantly. There is no reason to smoke any more. That's what I teach - and it's surprisingly simple.

Hypnosis is used to install this into the subconscious mind; the place where habits and other learned behaviours reside. The whole process takes about 90 minutes. The hypnotic part of the session, which is specific to you, is recorded and burned on to a CD for repeated listening over the next two weeks so the new habit is quickly put in place. You are now in control of your own feelings. There is no longer any need for a cigarette to achieve the feeling you were craving. It is easier and needs a lot less willpower than you think.
